Tom Ammiano is President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the main architect of the city's Domestic Partners Ordinance which provides equal benefits for employees of companies that contract with the City and County of San Francisco. In 1999, he gained national attention running for San Francisco mayor in a historic write-in campaign. Previously, Ammiano was in the forefront for the rights of gay teachers and was the first openly gay member of the San Francisco School Board, later serving as its President. Dubbed "The Mother of Gay Comedy," Ammiano has also been a stand-up comic since 1980 and has appeared all over the country with his fast-paced topical humor.
